Mother Goddess, a clay figurine dating from 6000 BCE, was excavated by James Mellaart in 1961 in Çatalhöyük, Turkey and soon became a national symbol of the fertility of Anatolia. When it was unearthed, its head and the armrest on its left side were missing. Even though there is no scientific proof of the object’s original appearance, the current head and the armrest on its left are reconstructed based on other figurines excavated at the same archeological site. The construction of these figural elements is therefore intertwined with the imagination of the archeologist.
Horror Vacui* shows alternative reconstructing possibilities for the two reconstructed heads with other figurines also unearthed in Çatalhöyük.

Vakum korkusu Aslı Çavuşoğlu’nun sergideki çalışmasında ironik bir şekilde ele alınıyor. Neolitik döneme ait meşhur Çatalhöyük Tanrıçası’nın kafa bölümünün bir rekonstrüksiyon olduğuna dikkat çeken sanatçı (doğrusu ben kafa bölümünün arkeolojik keşfin ardından tahmini bir şekilde sonradan eklendiğini bilmiyordum) heykelciğin gerçekte nasıl bir kafaya sahip olabileceğine dair fantastik alternatifler sunuyor.
